Manchester United add five players to Europa League squad
Brandon Williams could make the Manchester United matchday squad for the first time against Astana in the Europa League tonight.
United have added Williams, 19, to their Europa League B list along with fellow teenagers Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong, James Garner and Mason Greenwood.
Left-back Williams did not train with the United first-team squad during their open session at Carrington on Wednesday, but has been in superb form for the Under-23s and did not figure in the Under-19s’ friendly draw with Hertha Berlin at Altrincham on Wednesday evening.
Full-back Diogo Dalot is in contention for his first appearance of the campaign against Astana but Luke Shaw is still injured and Solskjaer may rest Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Ashley Young.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer included Williams in the travelling squad for the Champions League knockout second leg at Paris Saint-Germain in March and the academy graduate received squad number 53.
Uefa rules state: “A player may be registered on List B if he is born on, or after, 1 January 1998 and has been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years since his 15th birthday (players aged 16 may be submitted if they have been registered with the club for the previous two years).” Clubs have to add B list players 24 hours before kick-off.
Solskjaer has already confirmed Greenwood, 17, will make his second United start and Chong and Gomes, both 19, are also in line for full debuts.
“David [de Gea] signed his contract and now we’ve got him maybe I should keep on playing him,” Solskjaer said. “Sergio will play tomorrow, for sure.
“He’s proven to be a top, top keeper behind David and to keep him ready if something happens to David, tomorrow is a chance for me to give him some much needed game-time, because David’s been very robust and [Romero]’s always been reliable.
“One [starter] sits here (Tuanzebe), he’s going to start. Because I have a big squad, we had pre-season, which went really well, everyone was fighting for places, then the closer we got to the league, we had to maker a decision on the starting XI.
“Unfortunately for Axel, he just didn’t just make the starting XI and we’re playing well. Now’s a chance for some to get some minutes and we’ll have a game every three or four days now, so we’ll get to use the squad more and there’ll be some young ones.
“Greenwood will play definitely, it’ll be his first start since Cardiff last season, and he needs game time.”
Revised United Europa League squad:
David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Lee Grant, Matej Kovar, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Harry Maguire, Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young, Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, Brandon Williams, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Fred, Daniel James, Angel Gomes, Nemanja Matic, James Garner, Scott McTominay, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Tahith Chong
