Manchester United transfers that could still happen in August
The transfer window in England finally came to a close on Thursday evening and Manchester United ended with three new players in their ranks.
Deals were agreed early on for Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka and a late move for Harry Maguire saw the club break the world record transfer fee for a defender.
Efforts to add another midfielder didn’t come to anything and while the transfer window has come to a close, meaning United can’t bring anybody else in now until January, there are still some potential deals which could be pushed over the line before the end of the month.
United agreed a late deal for Romelu Lukaku ahead of the window closing which means speculation about him will not continue to run until the end of the month but what about other potential deals that could go through?
Paul Pogba continues to be linked with the exit after saying earlier in the summer he is ready for a new challenge. United want to keep the World Cup winner and rejected an embarrassingly low offer from Real Madrid earlier this week.
The Spanish transfer window remains open until the end of the month which means there’s still a possibility the La Liga giants could come back with an improved offer. However, the chances of a deal being agreed are very slim given Real are unlikely to be able to match what United are after and the club are keen to retain the services of the France international.
One player who the club are happy to sell, however, is Marcos Rojo. Solskjaer now has seven centre backs at his disposal after the arrival of Harry Maguire which means something has to give before the end of the month.
Rojo was in talks with Everton over a possible move on deadline day but it didn’t get over the line as they wanted him on loan, whereas United preferred a sale.
United also rejected an offer from Everton for Chris Smalling the day before deadline day but the club are open to offers for Rojo who is also believed to be open to leaving abroad.
Clubs in La Liga, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 have until September 2 to sign players while the Serie A transfer window closes on August 23 which means United could sell to any number of clubs should the right offer come about.
United would be willing to let Matteo Darmian leave. The right-back is behind both Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot and Ashley Young in the pecking order and only made seven appearances in all competitions last season.
Loan deals can be pushed through until September 2 which gives a number of United’s younger talent chance to get out for more regular game time next season.
Joel Pereira has already said he wants to go out on loan next season while a move away from United for someone like Ethan Hamilton would help him secure more game time.
Tahith Chong, James Garner and Angel Gomes would all benefit from loan spells but spent long periods in and around the first team during the last campaign and provided back up when players were injured so Solskjaer may not risk sending them away.
Mason Greenwood won’t be going anywhere as Solskjaer prepares to integrate him fully into the first team set up.
